I've spent the last five years living between Bangkok and the Eastern Seaboard and have made the trip to both more times than I can count - for weekends, for week-long stays, with friends, with my parents, on every budget. This is the honest head-to-head I give people who message me asking which to book, with the prices I actually paid in 2026, not the optimistic ones on booking sites.

Which is right for you
If you're flying into Bangkok and have a few days, Pattaya is the obvious pick - it's a 2-hour drive away with no extra flight, no extra airport, and no extra cost. If you're building a trip around the beach and you've got the budget, Phuket's Andaman coast is in a different league for sand and water, and the island day-trips out of Phuket are some of the best in the country.
Pick Pattaya if you want low costs, a short transfer from Bangkok, lots to do on land when you're not at the beach, and easy, walkable nightlife. Pick Phuket if postcard beaches, snorkelling and island-hopping are the priority and you don't mind paying more and flying to get there. Most first-timers from Bangkok on a tight schedule are happier in Pattaya; most beach-holiday romantics with a week and a bigger wallet are happier in Phuket.

Cost: which is cheaper
Pattaya is clearly cheaper - often by a third, sometimes by half on transport. The gap comes down to two things: you don't pay for a flight to reach Pattaya, and you don't pay Phuket's notoriously high taxi prices once you arrive. A short hop across Patong that costs ฿300–600 by taxi is a ฿10–30 songthaew (baht bus) ride in Pattaya.
Here's roughly what a mid-range traveller spends per day in each, in 2026 baht. Budget backpackers can go well under these; luxury travellers can blow well past them in both.

The exception is alcohol at international-style venues and imported goods, which cost much the same in both. But for the everyday stuff - food, local transport, mid-range rooms - Pattaya wins the budget contest comfortably. Beaches & islands
This is where Phuket earns its premium. Phuket's west-coast beaches - Kata, Karon, Surin, Kamala, Nai Harn - have the soft sand and clear Andaman water people picture when they think "Thai beach." Pattaya's main city beach is, honestly, average: the sand is fine, the water is busy and not always clear, and it's lined with boats and beach chairs rather than postcard emptiness.
Pattaya's secret is that you don't swim in town - you take the 45-minute ferry to Koh Larn (Coral Island), where beaches like Tawaen and Samae are genuinely beautiful and a ferry costs about ฿30 each way. For island-hopping, Phuket is the clear winner. Day trips to Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island) and the Similan Islands (open roughly mid-October to mid-May) are world-class. Pattaya's island scene - Koh Larn, Koh Sak and Koh Phai - is fun and far cheaper, but smaller in scale and scenery.

If beaches are your single biggest priority, don't talk yourself into Pattaya to save money - you'll spend the trip wishing you were on the Andaman. But if the beach is just one part of the trip, Pattaya plus a Koh Larn day delivers 80% of the experience at half the cost.
Getting there & around

Phuket needs a flight: about 1h 15m from Bangkok (BKK or DMK) to Phuket International (HKT), then a 45-minute to 1-hour transfer to the main beaches for around ฿800–1,200. The flight is cheap and frequent, but it's still a half-day of travel versus a 2-hour drive.
Getting around is the bigger difference. Pattaya is compact and walkable, with ฿10–30 songthaews looping the main roads constantly. Phuket is large and spread out, and its taxis are famously expensive with limited metered options, so most visitors either rent a scooter or budget for pricey transfers.
Nightlife, families & vibe
For nightlife, call it a draw - both are heavyweight. Pattaya's Walking Street, Soi 6 and LK Metro pack the most bars per square metre in Thailand, all walkable. Phuket concentrates its party scene on Bangla Road in Patong, with more polished beach clubs elsewhere on the island. Pattaya is denser and easier on foot; Phuket's is a bit more spread out and, in places, more upmarket.

On vibe: Pattaya is brash, busy and unpretentious; you either love its energy or you don't. Phuket is bigger and more varied - you can have a quiet luxury beach holiday in Surin or a rowdy one in Patong. If you want a calmer, more scenic feel, Phuket gives you more room to find it.
When to go
Both are best in the cool, dry season from November to March. The key difference is what the rainy season does to each. Pattaya's Gulf coast stays usable year-round - rain comes in short afternoon bursts, and the sea rarely shuts down. Phuket's Andaman coast gets a real southwest monsoon from May to October, with rougher seas, red-flag swimming days and some island trips (including the Similans) closed for the season.
