Pattaya gets unfairly typecast. Yes, it has a famous nightlife strip - but the same compact bay on Thailand's eastern Gulf coast also hides a white-sand island 45 minutes offshore, an enormous hand-carved teak temple, world-class water parks and some of the best-value family attractions in the country. After five years covering Chonburi, my honest view is that the best things to do in Pattaya reward people who plan a little: start early, carry cash, and pick the right area for the right activity. This guide is the master list - 30 ideas grouped into themes, with real 2026 prices, how long each takes, and exactly where to go. If you're researching what to do in Pattaya for a first trip, work through the quick picks below, then the at-a-glance table.
A quick orientation, because area shapes everything. Central Pattaya is the busy middle - Beach Road, Second Road, the malls and the pier. Jomtien just south is calmer and beach-focused. Pratumnak ("the hill") holds the quiet coves and Big Buddha. Naklua is the older north end with the Sanctuary of Truth. Bali Hai Pier, at the foot of Walking Street, launches every island boat.

Islands & beaches
The water is the reason Pattaya exists, and it's still the best half of the city. The signature trip is Koh Larn (Coral Island): a public ferry leaves Bali Hai Pier for roughly ฿30 each way and crosses in about 45 minutes, dropping you at Naban Pier near Tawaen Beach. Faster speedboats run ฿300–400 per person and take 15 minutes, leaving when full. On the island, Tawaen is the lively, water-sports beach; Tien and Samae are quieter swimming sand. If you can't decide how to cross, our deep dive on the ferry vs speedboat trade-off breaks it down by budget and group size.
Koh Larn (Coral Island)
Koh Larn is the easiest island escape near Pattaya and the single best thing a first-timer can do. The public ferry is absurd value - clear water, soft sand and several beaches all a short song-thaew from the pier. Swim at Tien or Samae before the tour boats arrive, then move to Tawaen for jet-skis, parasailing and beach restaurants. Two cautions: last ferries fill up around 17:00–18:00, and the island runs almost entirely on cash.
- Ferry
- ฿30 each way · 45 min · ~hourly
- Speedboat
- ฿300–400pp · 15 min · leaves when full
What you get
- Clear water and real white sand
- Cheap, scenic crossing
- Swimming, snorkelling and water sports
What to know
- Crowded on weekends and holidays
- Cash only; last ferry ~18:00
You don't need a boat for sand. Jomtien Beach is the long, relaxed stretch south of the centre, with shady loungers and seafood shacks. Wong Amat Beach in Naklua is the prettiest mainland beach and far calmer than the main city beach. For water sports - jet-ski, parasailing, banana boat - Jomtien and Tawaen have the fullest menus, usually ฿400–800 a ride. For where the sand is actually good, see our best beaches in Pattaya guide.
Watch the jet-ski deposit scam
The classic con: you rent a jet-ski, return it, and the operator points to "new" damage and demands thousands of baht. Before you ride, film the whole machine on your phone - both sides, front and back - and never hand over your passport as a deposit. Rent from the busy, established stands on Jomtien rather than an empty patch of sand, and agree the price and time in writing first.
Temples & culture
The cultural side of Pattaya is genuinely strong, and it's where the city surprises people. Top of the list is the Sanctuary of Truth in Naklua - a vast, entirely hand-carved teak temple right on the sea, still being built by hand after decades. Entry is around ฿500 for adults (less for children) and you'll want about 90 minutes. It's the one paid attraction I tell everyone not to skip; our full Sanctuary of Truth guide covers tickets, timing and how to avoid the tour-bus rush.
฿500 · ~90 min. Hand-carved seaside temple; go before 11:00 to beat coach tours.
Free · 45 min. Wat Phra Yai's 18m gold Buddha and the best free sea view in town.
฿500–600 · half day. Sculptured tropical gardens plus a daily Thai cultural show.
Free · 30 min. A 130m gold-inlaid Buddha carved into a cliff face; pairs with Nong Nooch.
Big Buddha Hill (Wat Phra Yai) on Pratumnak is free, takes half an hour, and gives you the best panorama of the bay - come for sunset. Nong Nooch Tropical Garden, about 20 minutes south, is a sprawling botanical park with a twice-daily Thai cultural and elephant show; budget ฿500–600 and half a day. Pair it with Khao Chi Chan (Buddha Mountain) nearby - a 130-metre Buddha laser-cut into a limestone cliff, free to view. Together they make an easy, low-key cultural morning away from the beach.
Local tip: dress and timing
For any temple, cover shoulders and knees - the Sanctuary of Truth hands out wraps but the queue is long at midday. Visit cultural sites in the morning when it's cooler and the coach tours haven't arrived, then save beaches and water parks for the hot afternoon when shade and water actually help.
Shows & nightlife
Pattaya's evening entertainment is far broader than its reputation suggests. The flagship family-friendly option is a cabaret show: Tiffany's Show and Alcazar, both on Second Road, run lavish ~75-minute productions with elaborate costumes and dance numbers. Tickets are roughly ฿800–1,200 depending on seating, and these are genuinely suitable for all ages - think Vegas-style revue, not adult content. Book the early show and you'll still have the evening free for dinner.
For a free look at the city's nightside, Walking Street at the end of Beach Road is worth a stroll - neon, street performers and a buzz that's a spectacle in itself, and you're free to just walk through. It's adult-oriented after dark, so it's a wander-and-leave for most visitors rather than a night out. Pratumnak and Jomtien offer calmer rooftop bars and beach lounges if that's more your speed.
Family & rainy-day fun
This is where Pattaya quietly beats most of Thailand for families. The headline act is Cartoon Network Amazone in Najomtien - a fully themed water park with slides, a wave pool and a kids' zone, at around ฿1,290 for a full day (cheaper booked online). Nearby Ramayana Water Park is the bigger, more thrill-focused alternative, often ฿1,200–1,500, and regularly rated among Asia's best. Both are full-day outings, so go on a weekday.
~฿1,290 · full day. Themed slides, wave pool and a dedicated toddler zone.
฿1,200–1,500 · full day. Bigger thrill slides and a lazy river; rated among Asia's best.
~฿500 · 1.5 hr. Walk-through aquarium tunnel; perfect for a rainy hour.
~฿400 · 1–2 hr. 3D trick-art museum; the kids will fill your camera roll.
When the sky opens - and in green season, May to October, it can - you have plenty of indoor backups. Underwater World on Sukhumvit Road is a walk-through aquarium tunnel (around ฿500, 90 minutes). Frost Magical Ice of Siam is a sub-zero ice-sculpture hall, Art in Paradise is a 3D trick-art museum (~฿400), and the Pattaya Floating Market on Sukhumvit packs four regional zones of food and crafts into one canal-side site for around ฿200 entry. For a deeper family itinerary, our Pattaya with kids guide sequences these into stress-free days.

Easy day trips
Pattaya is a brilliant base because so much sits within a couple of hours. Koh Samet, a powder-sand national-park island, is about two hours east via Ban Phe pier - a stunning overnight or long day trip. Bangkok is roughly two hours north by bus or van (฿120–150 by public coach) for temples, malls and markets. And the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, 40 minutes inland, is a vast drive-through safari that's a hit with kids - all easy "what to do near Pattaya" additions.
How to plan by trip length
The mistake most visitors make is trying to do everything. Pick a lane based on how long you have, and you'll enjoy each thing properly instead of rushing. Here's how I'd sequence the best things to do in Pattaya by trip length.
To make all of this concrete, here's what a typical day actually costs once you add up tickets, transport and food.
฿60 return ferry, song-thaews, a lounger and a seafood lunch, per person.
Sanctuary of Truth ฿500 plus Nong Nooch ฿500–600 and song-thaew hops.
Tiffany's or Alcazar ticket; book the early ~75-minute show.
One adult ticket; kids and online bookings come in cheaper.
Getting around is cheap: shared song-thaews (the blue pickups) loop Beach Road and Second Road for about ฿10–20 a hop, and Grab or Bolt cover anything further. For the full toolkit - where to base yourself and how to thread these into days that flow - start with the things-to-do pillar. One island, one temple, one show and one slow beach morning is, honestly, a near-perfect Pattaya trip.

Where to start
If you do nothing else, take the early ferry to Koh Larn, see the Sanctuary of Truth before the crowds, and catch an early cabaret show. That trio is the spine of a great Pattaya trip - build the rest around your beach mornings and the weather.
